I was asked to work on a documentary for ITV about how Queen Victoria turned Buckingham Palace from a bit of a laughingstock to one of the world’s most iconic buildings. The programme was to explore the day-to-day workings of the palace and recreating a typical meal for ‘Victoria’ and her household. Not a banquet, but to give an idea of how ‘she’ and, her ‘upstairs’ household would have dined on a usual evening at the beginning of her reign. Ian Sutton and I created a few dishes which were eaten by Sir Trevor McDonald, OBE, best known for his career as a news presenter with ITN. Joining Sir Trevor was Julie Etchingham an English television newsreader and journalist and, Annie Gray historian, cook, broadcaster and writer, specialising in the history of food and dining in Britain.
